Zelenskiy visits Hiroshima for ‘talks with friends.’ Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy arrived in Hiroshima on Saturday to meet leaders of the world’s richest countries and rally support for his country’s defense against Russia’s invasion.
Zelenskiy’s participation at the Group of Seven meeting in the first nuclear-attacked city highlighted Western governments’ fears about Russia’s nuclear threat.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and China-Taiwan relations are major issues for G7 participants at the Hiroshima meeting.
Japanese media showed Zelenskiy exiting a French government plane in his olive green fatigues and rushing to a car.
“Japan,” he tweeted. G7. Important contacts with Ukraine’s allies.”
His visit follows G7 warnings that countries using trade as a weapon will face “consequences,” sending a strong message to China over economic aggression.
French and European officials said it was vital that Zelenskiy came in person first to the Arab League and now to the G7, where representatives of the Global South are attending, to explain Ukraine’s stance as the victim of a Russian attack and his vision for peace.
“We have to use all the means to bind non-aligned states to the cause of the defence of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” a French presidential official told reporters.
Zelenskiy will meet with G7 leaders and, importantly, India and Brazil’s leaders, who have not distanced themselves from Moscow.
He will meet with the G7 on Sunday before addressing the Global South.
