Zelenskiy appeals to the ‘Global South’ during the G7 conference. Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskiy met with India’s Narendra Modi on Saturday and was scheduled to meet other “Global South” leaders at a Group of Seven (G7) conference to gain support for its battle against Russia.
Moscow and Beijing have criticized the three-day G7 summit in Hiroshima for imposing more sanctions on Russia and opposing China’s economic pressure.
Zelenskiy, wearing his olive green fatigues, was welcomed by G7 leaders and met with Modi as part of a series of engagements with non-aligned countries.
Modi tweeted a photo of the two shaking hands and said he had informed Zelenskiy that India would continue humanitarian aid for Ukraine and support “dialogue and diplomacy” to achieve peace.
Modi, whose BRIC nation includes Brazil and China, has not distanced himself from Russia. Its oil dealings with Russia undermine Western sanctions by giving Russia energy revenues.
A French presidential source told reporters that Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva would visit Zelenskiy in Hiroshima.
European sources said Zelenskiy had to attend Friday’s Arab League summit in Saudi Arabia and the Hiroshima meeting to explain Ukraine’s strategy for ending the war with Russia.
“I think this is a unique opportunity to (have) exchanges with a lot of countries from the south and express your situation, express a message and share a view,” French President Emmanuel Macron said.n”It could change the game.”
