The United States President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign called YouTube’s move to stop monitoring fake 2020 election fraud allegations “reckless” and potentially violent.
“YouTube’s reckless and irresponsible decision will invite further democratic decay and potential violence, and we urge them to reconsider this policy,” Biden campaign spokeswoman Kevin Munoz said in a statement.
On Friday, YouTube stopped eliminating content that may have disseminated misleading statements about the 2020 and earlier U.S. presidential elections.
The platform claimed that eliminating the content reduced “some misinformation, it could also have the unintended effect of curtailing political speech.”
Former President Donald Trump, Biden’s opponent, falsely claimed massive electoral fraud. Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, to challenge the result.
Munoz said YouTube’s policy adjustment did “not erase” the reality that Biden fairly won the 2020 presidential election and that social media companies promoted misinformation in 2020.
Trump, a Republican, wants his party’s candidacy to challenge Biden in 2024.
