On the reality television series “WWE Legends’ House,” WWE wrestling great Pat Patterson, 73, came out in an emotional scene in which he informed his fellow wrestling “Legends” of his homosexuality that he has kept secret from the public for over 50 years.
In 1958, before starring in the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF), which would later become WWE, the Canadian performer began his career in Montreal, Québec as “Pretty Boy” Pat Patterson. The character was meant to be overly effeminate, as he wore bright red lipstick and pink wrestling trunks while toting around a pet poodle.
Pat Patterson was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 1996
“Sitting here tonight, I am going to say something that I would never want to say publicly,” Patterson said. “For once in my life I’m going to be me now.
“I survived all this being gay.”
The tears began to build in the eyes of the bulky men sitting around the table. Dabbing his eyes, Patterson continued about how hard it has been on him to “survive this business” with his secret lifestyle.
Patterson revealed that he had a “friend,” whom is speculated to be his secret partner, for 40 years who passed away from a heart attack. After Patterson mentioned his partner’s death, he said, “And I end up alone,” through more tears.
However, his former wrestling colleagues showed support for their friend, showing him that he does not have to be alone in this.
“We love you, Pat. We’ve always loved you,” one said.
