World Cup Winner Mesut Ozil Helps 23 Sick Children

Even though the World Cup ended days ago, the World Cup fever has not ended quite yet. The championship-winning German star Mesut Ozil announced Wednesday, July 17, that he will help pay for 23 children’s surgeries in Brazil.

Ozil paid for the surgeries of 11 children in Brazil prior to the game, but he said he will raise the number up to 23, which equals the number of players who won the team the World Cup title.

He wrote on Facebook, “Since the victory of the #WorldCup is not only due to eleven players but to our whole team, I will now raise the number to 23. This is my personal thank-you for the hospitality of the people of Brazil.”

The Daily Mail reported that Ozil won £240,000, or about USD $324,544, for winning the World Cup and donated the money to charity.

Ozil’s donation is part of the BigShoe project, which holds a goal “to help children.” The project started in the 2006 World Cup in Germany when money was raised for a child’s surgery, and it has been carried on into 2010 and 2014’s tournaments as well.
