As the World Cup is underway and competition is getting more intense, the business in sports bars and pubs is skyrocketing. Soccer fans are filling up any restaurant that has big enough televisions to showcase the games. The entire United States is feeling a similar effect – one that only comes once every four years.
There’s no denying that the industry has thrived from the worldwide sporting event this past month, and there’s no sign of it slowing down anytime soon, either. “Our first USA game, it was like St. Patrick’s Day in here,” said Stacey Taylor, a manager at The Pub in The Greene Town Center in Beavercreek, Ohio. “Last night alone, we made almost $20,000. World Cup had a lot to do with that,” Taylor told Dayton Daily News after the Portugal game.
Restaurant managers and owners countrywide have anticipated the red, white and blue clan since the World Cup neared, and they’ve discovered that the crowd does a bit more than fill up seats.
“Besides the increased number of customers, the World Cup matches bring in a fun crowd, which makes the job interesting for the staff at Donnelly’s Pub,” said Stacey Donahue, the general manager of an Iowan pub.
“They’re loving it,” Donahue said about the wait staff. “It’s not even giving them more hours, but it’s the quality of the hours that they’re getting and the quality of the money that they’re making, too,” she told The Daily Iowan.
The World Cup is far from over, so there’s still money and memories to be made. The next scheduled game U.S game is Thursday, Jun. 26 against Germany.
