World Cup-winning Germany landed home in Berlin Tuesday, July 15, and received a hero-like welcome by hundreds of thousands of soccer fans with the World Cup trophy in hand.

According to the Guardian, the team arrived at Tegel airport and took an open-top bus, with years they have won the trophy written on it, to the Brandenburg Gate for a huge celebration party. The players were accompanied by almost half a million of fans on the way.
The BBC reported that many German fans took the day off just to join the nation’s celebration, even Tuesday was not an official holiday.
German coach Joachim Loew had a big part of the team winning the tournament as well, but he did not forget to thank the German people for the championship.
“For our sakes the fans suffered with us. They were nervous with us. In the end they cheered with us. Without you we would not be here,” Loew said.
The 22-year-old nation hero Mario Goetze, who scored the only goal in the final game that gave the country the winning title, said making all the way up and bringing home the trophy was “dreamlike.”
Germany defeated Argentina 1 to 0 during extra time in Sunday, July 13,’s World Cup final match played in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. German soccer fans waited 24 years for the trophy to come home since 1990.
