The White House said on Thursday that it had evidence about the Russian military’s execution of troops who disobeyed instructions over the conflict with Ukraine. White House spokesman John Kirby informed reporters, “We have information that the Russian military has been executing soldiers who refuse to follow orders.”
“We also have information that Russian commanders are threatening to execute entire units if they seek to retreat from Ukrainian artillery fire,” Kirby stated. Representatives of the Russian embassy in the United States, the Russian military ministry, and the Kremlin did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Anatoly Antonov, the Russian ambassador to Washington, did not mention the White House accusations in a remark posted on Telegram’s messaging app.
However, Antonov described the U.S. action as “provocative and inflammatory actions in the international arena that look more like pouring oil on the fire” rather than an attempt to defuse tension, citing Ukraine’s most recent $150 million military aid package.
“It is imperative to stop the senseless transfer of billions of dollars to the financially collapsed Kyiv regime,” Antonov posted on Telegram. “Time to stop showing total disdain for the opinions of your citizens and indifference to the growing number of victims dying from American weaponry.”
Russian soldiers continue their assault to take the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka despite suffering significant casualties, according to statements made by Ukrainian officials on Wednesday.
The U.S. has been giving Kyiv a lot of help and has loudly denounced Russia’s invasion of that country.
According to Kirby, Russia’s assembled soldiers lacked the necessary equipment, training, and readiness for battle. According to him, the military engaged in “human wave tactics” by deploying platoons of inexperienced fighters into combat.
Kirby referred to threats of execution as savage. “I think it’s a symptom of … how poorly Russia’s military leaders know they’re doing and how badly they have handled this from a military perspective,” he stated.
