On June 25, United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) head coach Jurgen Klinsmann wrote a note that playfully acts as an approved excuse for employees to get out of work in order to watch the World Cup match between United States and Germany. The noon kick-off time was scheduled to the dismay of Americans interested in watching the game.
The note is written similarly to that of a doctor’s note, and it includes a space for the employee to fill out his or her name.
“I understand that this absence may reduce the productivity of your workplace, but I can assure you that it is for an important cause,” Klinsmann wrote. He went on to suggest that the boss should “act like a good leader and take the day off as well.”
The note was initially released by the official US Soccer Twitter feed and was shared again by Klinsmann’s own account. Klinsmann was sure to hash tag “business satire” to clarify the note was made in good fun.

However, many Americans who were not dismissed from their work still made time to watch the game, which means many companies still had to endure a reduction in productivity. Employees who watched the game during work hours were not too shy about sharing Instagram photos of themselves urging on USMNT.
This much-anticipated match is likely to continue the trend of breaking TV viewership records for ESPN. According to CNNMoney, the United States-Portugal match on ESPN averaged 18.2 million viewers on Sunday, June 22, which topped the 11.1 million viewers for United States-Ghana on June 16.

Germany defeated USMNT 1-0, but the Americans did well enough in the play-in round to move on to the Round of 16, something they have accomplished three of the last four World Cups. USMNT go on to play the winner of H Group.
