US will send Ukraine ATACMS long-range missiles, Biden tells Zelenskiy. NBC News reported Friday that President Joe Biden briefed Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that Washington will provide ATACMS long-range missiles, citing three U.S. officials and a legislative official.
Kyiv has frequently requested the Biden administration’s Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) to assault and damage Russian-occupied supply lines, air bases, and rail networks.
When Zelenskiy met with Biden on Thursday, the White House announced a $325 million military aid package for Kyiv but did not discuss ATACMS.
The White House and Pentagon did not address the NBC report. The Pentagon said, “In regards to ATACMS we have nothing to announce.” Zelenskiy was not promised ATACMS during his Thursday meetings.
Reuters stated the Biden administration was considering sending Ukraine 190-mile ATACMS.
U.S. Army website: ATACMS are designed for “deep attack of enemy second-echelon forces,” and could attack command and control centers, air defenses, and supply installations behind the front line.
On Thursday, Biden publicly told Zelenskiy that the U.S. would assist his war against Russian invaders despite Republican opposition to giving billions more in aid.
Zelenskiy praised Biden on Thursday for the latest weapons, including air defenses, adding, “it has exactly what our soldiers need now.”
