On Tuesday, South Korea’s presidential office announced the first economic security discussion between South Korea, the US, and Japan to improve supply chains and technologies.
Amid rising global tensions, a more assertive China, and an unpredictable North Korea, Japan, South Korea, and China want to cooperate more.
“This conversation is important in increasing bilateral economic security cooperation with the United States to the trilateral level,” the office of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol stated.
“It should improve the three nations’ key supply chain resilience and crisis response capacities and create collaboration to promote and protect vital and emerging technologies.”
At a November conference, Yoon, Biden, and Kishida decided to start the negotiations in Hawaii on Monday.
The US has accused China and Russia of weaponizing supply networks to destabilize the global economy and geopolitics.
Yoon’s office said officials reviewed quantum, bio, and space technologies and strategies to stabilize Hawaii’s semiconductor, battery, and key mineral supply chains.
They addressed collaboration to preserve technological, data, and economic interdependence vulnerabilities.
