US Mulls Blacklisting CXMT to Hinder China’s Chip Innovation, Bloomberg Reports
The United States is reportedly contemplating the imposition of sanctions on several Chinese technology companies, including ChangXin Memory Technologies, a prominent chipmaker. The aim is to further curtail China’s progress in developing advanced semiconductors, as reported by Bloomberg News on March 8. According to sources familiar with the matter, the U.S. Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security is evaluating the addition of ChangXin to the entity list, a designation that limits access to U.S. technology. Alongside ChangXin, five other Chinese firms are also under consideration for inclusion.
As of now, neither the Commerce Department, the Bureau of Industry and Security, nor ChangXin Memory Technologies has responded to requests for comments from Reuters.
This development follows earlier actions taken by the United States in the tech sector. Last year, the U.S. moved to block American imports to a major plant of Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) after it produced chips that powered Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro phone. This move had significant repercussions, disrupting millions of dollars’ worth of shipments of chipmaking materials and parts from suppliers, such as Entegris.
The U.S. has been employing increasingly assertive measures in recent months to restrict shipments of more advanced artificial intelligence (AI) chips to China. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to prevent Beijing from acquiring cutting-edge U.S. technologies that could potentially bolster its military capabilities.
As the geopolitical competition intensifies, semiconductor technology has become a focal point, with nations vying for dominance in this critical industry. The potential sanctions on Chinese tech companies underscore the strategic importance the U.S. places on controlling access to advanced semiconductor technology to maintain a competitive edge and address national security concerns. The situation reflects the broader global tensions surrounding technology, trade, and strategic influence between the United States and China.
