On Thursday, President Joe Biden began a fresh campaign to persuade Americans to spend billions more on aiding Israel and Ukraine in their battles, claiming that only the U.S.’s participation can stop global anarchy.

“American leadership keeps the globe from falling apart. America is safe because of its alliances, according to Biden.

Biden connected Hamas fighters attacking Israel from the Gaza Strip to Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose troops invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

“Hamas and Putin represent different threats, but they share this in common: They both want to annihilate a neighboring democracy,” stated Putin. According to someone familiar with his plans, Biden would ask Congress for $100 billion in fresh funding, including $60 billion for Ukraine and $14 billion for Israel. The source said the proposal would also contain $7 billion for the Indo-Pacific area, $10 billion for humanitarian relief, and $14 billion for border security.

According to the source, the U.S. weapons stockpiles would be replaced and modernized with half of the $60 billion Biden asks for for Ukraine.

As a sign of support for Israel following the Oct. 7 massacre by Hamas terrorists who launched incursions from Gaza and murdered 1,400 people in southern Israel, Biden spoke approximately 20 hours after his quick journey to Israel.

The urgency of Biden’s message is apparent. After a fatal bomb at a Gaza hospital, tensions are at an all-time high as Israel prepares to start a ground invasion to drive Palestinian terrorists from Gaza affiliated with the Hamas movement. Local officials claim that hundreds of Palestinians have died due to Israel’s assault.

In response to claims by Hamas authorities that Israel was to blame for the hospital explosion, Biden said: “We can’t ignore the humanity of innocent Palestinians who only want to live in peace and have opportunity.”

Biden encouraged Israelis not to act out of “blind rage” in response to Hamas as worldwide outrage over the airstrikes on Gaza grows.

After his address, the Republican National Committee charged Biden with favoritism toward Iran. “Biden could BEGIN holding the Iranian regime accountable by vigorously enforcing oil sanctions, and by reversing course on his appeasement policies that have enriched them with tens of billions of dollars,” stated the statement.

NATO ALLIES AT RISK?

The question of “Why does it matter to America” that the U.S. is supporting the conflicts was brought up by Biden, who admitted that some Americans are wondering about this.

“I know these conflicts can seem far away,” he stated.

“History has shown us that terrorists and tyrants who don’t pay a price for their actions bring about more instability, more murder, and more destruction. He added that they continue, and the expense and risks to America and the rest of the globe only increase.

According to Biden, Putin might threaten NATO partners Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania if he is not stopped. “If Putin attacks a NATO ally, we will defend every inch of NATO,” he declared.

He warned that “the risks of conflicts and chaos could spread,” even to the Middle East, if the United States did nothing. The Republican-controlled House of Representatives is now in a political stalemate as they decide who will take over as speaker after Kevin McCarthy was fired. This is the backdrop against which the American president spoke.

Biden remarked, directly addressing the quarreling Republicans, “You can’t let petty, partisan, angry politics get in the way of our responsibilities as a great nation.”

I won’t allow it to happen, he declared.

Democratic opposition

Biden is testing whether Republican lawmakers can be persuaded to put aside their opposition and go along with spending on Ukraine by combining the priorities for Israel and Ukraine into one package. Ukraine’s 20-month-old war with Russia has already absorbed billions of dollars in U.S. weapons with no end.

On Friday, the package is anticipated to be publicly introduced. To avoid a confrontation with Republicans, Biden emphasized the economic gain. According to him, the weapons provided to Israel and the Ukraine are drawn from existing stockpiles, and the funding agreed by Congress would be used to create new supplies made by American manufacturers.

Any budget proposal must be approved by the Republican-led House, without a speaker for 17 days, and the Democratic-led U.S. Senate, where more spending has bipartisan support.

After failing to get a majority of Republican support, conservative Jim Jordan, a former President Donald Trump supporter, promised to continue his campaign for House Speaker.

In recent weeks, House Republican members threatened to cut all federal spending in response to the $31.4 trillion in debt and ongoing budget deficits.

When presented with alternatives, around 4 out of 10 respondents in a Reuters/Ipsos survey conducted last week said the United States should back Israel’s stance in the conflict. Nearly half of respondents thought Americans should abstain or play no part.

In another Reuters/Ipsos survey conducted earlier this month, a similar percentage of respondents agreed that Washington “should provide weapons to Ukraine.”
