On Thursday, U.S. President Joe Biden said investigators were closing in on the source of the leak of highly sensitive intelligence papers, the worst security breach in a decade.
After the Pentagon sent the case to the Department of Justice last week, the investigation began.
Reuters has studied more than 50 “Secret” and “Top Secret” papers but has not independently verified their authenticity. The number of leaked documents is likely over 100.
“There’s a full blown investigation going on, as you know, with the intelligence community and the Justice Department, and they’re getting close but I don’t have an answer,” Biden told reporters in the middle of a three-day Irish tour.
“I’m not concerned about the leak, I’m concerned that it happened, but there is nothing contemporaneous that I’m aware of.”
On Wednesday, the Washington Post claimed that a 20-year-old military base worker and gun aficionado released the records.
The Post interviewed two Discord chat group participants for its unnamed article.
Discord announced its cooperation with law enforcement on Wednesday.
