A group of Mashco Piro people meet on June 27, 2024, along the Las Piedras river in Monte Salvado, which is in the province of Madre de Dios in Peru.
On Tuesday, Survival International released some rare pictures of the Mashco Piro, an uncontacted native group in the remote Peruvian Amazon. The pictures show dozens of people on the banks of a river near logging companies’ concessions.

According to the local indigenous rights group FENAMAD, the tribe has been seen coming out of the jungle more often in recent weeks to find food. They seem to be moving away from the growing number of loggers.

At the end of June, the Mashco Piro were seen on the banks of a river in the Madre de Dios region in the southeast of Peru, close to the border with Brazil. This is what Survival International said when it shared the pictures.

In the past few weeks, the Mashco Piro have been seen coming out of the jungle more often.
Survival International’s Caroline Pearce said, “These amazing pictures show that a lot of Mashco Piro live alone just a few kilometers from where the loggers are about to start their work.”

In the past few days, more than 50 Mashco Piro people have shown up near a Yine town called Monte Salvado. The indigenous rights group said that another group of 17 people showed up near the town of Puerto Nuevo.

Survival International says that the Mashco Piro live in an area between two nature reserves in Madre de Dios. They don’t usually show up and don’t talk to the Yine or anyone else very much.

A number of logging companies have rights to cut down trees in the Mashco Piro area.
