UN Urges Caution Following Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Strike Amid Ukraine War
A recent drone attack targeting Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia power plant has heightened concerns of a potential “major nuclear accident,” according to a warning issued by the UN’s atomic watchdog. The attack, which Russia attributes to Ukraine, allegedly resulted in injuries to three individuals. However, Ukraine vehemently denies any involvement in the incident.
Situated at the forefront of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the sprawling Zaporizhzhia plant, under Russian control since the full-scale invasion in February 2022, possesses six reactors, making it one of Europe’s largest nuclear facilities. Despite ceasing power generation in 2022, the plant still requires a continuous power supply to cool one of its reactors, which remains in a state of “hot conservation,” implying it is not entirely offline.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi condemned Sunday’s drone strike as a “reckless” act and emphasized its potential to exacerbate nuclear safety and security risks at the plant. While the attack caused physical damage, including impacts on reactor containment structures, radiation levels reportedly remained within acceptable limits, with no significant harm reported.
Nevertheless, the IAEA cautioned that the incident posed a serious threat to the integrity of the reactor’s containment system, underscoring the gravity of the situation. Grossi highlighted the alarming reality of “at least three direct hits” on crucial reactor components, stressing the imperative of safeguarding nuclear facilities from hostile actions.
Accusations of shelling and threats to the Zaporizhzhia plant are not uncommon, with both Russia and Ukraine pointing fingers at each other. The Russian-installed administration at the plant has accused Ukraine’s armed forces of instigating the attack, while Ukrainian authorities refute these claims, attributing the incident to Russia’s occupation of the facility.
In response to mounting tensions and repeated assaults on the plant, the IAEA has maintained a vigilant presence, closely monitoring the situation to mitigate the risk of a catastrophic nuclear event.
