Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated his effort to deter migrants arriving in Britain in small boats had decreased crossings by 20%, hoping to quell criticism from his party and the nation.

After being elected last October, Sunak pledged to “stop the boats” as one of his five promises to Britain.

After a record number of migrants landed in Britain last year, his party and the public have criticized him for moving too slowly.

“In the five months since I launched the plan, crossings (across the English Channel) are now down 20% compared to last year,” Sunak told a southern England news conference.

“The plan is working,” he said, adding that his government would fight for a new law in parliament.

He also suggested a pact with Albania meant Britain was returning more migrants.

In six months, we’ve returned 1,800 to Albania. “We’ve gone from accepting one in five Albanian asylum cases to one in 50,” Sunak remarked.

“Albanian small boat arrivals are down 90% this year.”
