On Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited marines on the eastern front to thank them for fighting Russia’s assault.
On the national Day of the Ukrainian Marines, Zelenskiy, clad in a military khaki sweatshirt and pants, awarded dozens of combat-ready marines.
“Happy Marines Day, especially to such strong people who are in one of the hottest but also one of the strongest… sectors—the Vuhledar-Marinka direction,” Zelenskiy remarked.
In a daily briefing, Ukraine’s military said it had resisted many enemy attacks on Marinka in eastern Donetsk.
Donetsk, one of four territories Russia annexed last September after a “sham” referendum following Moscow’s full-scale invasion, has seen fierce fighting.
Zelenskiy also decorated marine unit leaders. In addition, he promised additional weapons and a specialized marine corps from the Ukrainian government.
