Ukraine seeks to terminate its free trade agreement with Belarus. According to statements made by cabinet minister Taras Melnychuk on Monday, the Ukrainian government has recommended to parliament that a free trade deal with Belarus be terminated. This agreement provides assistance for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which originated in February 2022.

He announced via Telegram’s messaging app that the decision to annul the agreement was made “in connection with a fundamental change of circumstances… the involvement of the Republic of Belarus in the illegal use of force against Ukraine.”

The administration has proposed that the free trade agreement signed in December 1992, as well as two protocols associated with the pact, be terminated. Ukraine severed its commercial ties with Minsk following Russia’s invasion of the eastern region.

It is the responsibility of the Ukrainian parliament to carry out the termination of interstate agreements. In the years following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Belarus continued to be one of Ukraine’s most important commercial partners. Belarus continued to provide Kyiv with considerable quantities of petroleum and fertilizers.

In conclusion, Ukraine’s audacious decision to end the Free Trade Agreement with Belarus marks a significant turning point in bilateral relations between the two nations. The consequences of this decision will likely extend beyond the sphere of economics, and they will have ramifications for the dynamics of geopolitics and the stability of the region. As the situation continues to develop, the international community keeps a careful eye on the newly emerging events and attempts to forecast the broader effects of these changes on the worldwide scene.
