Governor Reports: Ukraine Air Attack on Belgorod Results in 8 Injuries
The conflict between Ukraine and Russia escalated further as a Ukrainian air attack targeted Russia’s Belgorod region, resulting in injuries to eight individuals and significant damage to residential buildings and vehicles. Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of the Belgorod region, reported on Thursday that among the injured was an 11-year-old girl who required hospitalization.
The attack inflicted damage on approximately 34 flats across 19 apartment buildings and around three dozen cars in the city of Belgorod, the administrative hub of the region. Russia’s defense ministry stated that its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 15 rockets launched from the RM-70 Vampir system, along with one drone over the Belgorod region.
Additionally, three drones were downed over Russia’s Kursk region and two over the Bryansk region, all of which border Ukraine. The Russian defense ministry conveyed this information via a statement on the Telegram messaging app. However, Reuters was unable to independently verify these reports, and there has been no immediate comment from Ukraine regarding the incident.
Kyiv has previously asserted that targeting military, energy, and transport infrastructure within Russia serves to undermine Moscow’s broader war efforts. The attack on the Belgorod region marks a significant escalation in the conflict and underscores the volatility and severity of the situation between Ukraine and Russia.
