The United Kingdom seeks to step up their robotic and autonomous systems (RAS) development to catch up with other countries through a series of outdoor tests.
The UK decided that RAS technology would be a key component of solidifying the growth of its economy and creating new jobs. Outdoor tests move RAS robots a few steps closer to deployment in the real world. The official robotics strategy notes the objectives and potential hurdles in developing RAS robots.
“In many markets, RAS technology will face regulatory hurdles. In others, gaining social acceptance may be the key to early adoption. Such barriers are best overcome by engaging with the customer and exposing innovation to the rigors of the real world, but this can only take place in real environments; laboratories are not enough,” the strategy stated, according to Tech Crunch,
Robots could roam around at nuclear sites, farms and private roads while still in their developmental stages. Naturally, people will have to adjust to seeing robots out in public, traveling through empty parking lots or strolling around lakes.
The UK has ramped up anticipation of the robots with scheduled RAS Grand Challenge competitions. The robots will be tested and pitted against each other to excite the public and demonstrate the usefulness and efficiency of cutting-edge machinery.
