On Wednesday, Britain’s competition authority reviewed Google’s proposals to let app developers leave Google Play’s billing system.
Last June, Britain’s investigation revealed concerns that Google’s exclusive control over in-app payments unfairly restricted app developers by forcing them to use Google Play’s billing system, reducing competition and hurting customers.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) stated the new suggestions allow app developers to offer a payment system “of their choosing” or give customers a choice between Google Play’s billing system and another.
The suggestion suggests third-party payment providers promote to app developers.
“We need to make sure these commitments will work in practice – so we welcome all feedback, which we will carefully consider before making a final decision,” said CMA senior director of antitrust Ann Pope.
