UK to work ‘constructively’ with Meta over encryption and online safety. The British interior minister Suella Braverman said she wants to cooperate with Facebook-owner Meta (META.O) on end-to-end encryption on Instagram and Facebook Messenger and its risk to children.

Meta has been advised by the authorities not to encrypt those two platforms without child sexual abuse protections.

“My call to Meta is to work with us more constructively to roll out end-to-end encryption with robust safety measures because what they’re proposing will make Facebook and Instagram Direct safe havens for paedophiles,” she told the BBC.

Meta, whose WhatsApp technology encrypts messages, says encryption protects users from hackers, fraudsters, and criminals.

Later on Wednesday, it will present its efforts to satisfy the government, including banning persons over 19 from messaging teenagers who do not follow them and employing technology to identify bad behavior.

Braverman hoped the duo could resolve their issues without Britain penalizing Meta financially under a new law.
“We want them to use technology. On Times Radio, she stated the solution existed to preserve user privacy and child safety.

The government has asked Meta to show how they will protect children, but the company has not responded. It continues to communicate with the corporation.

Social media platforms must do more to protect minors from hazardous content under the Online Safety Bill enacted by Parliament on Tuesday.

The new law pits companies against the government over end-to-end encryption. “If necessary, we will use our legal powers,” Braverman stated. Let’s avoid that point.”
