The New York Times reported that U.S. intelligence agencies suspect Ukrainian spies or military intelligence planned a drone strike on the Kremlin this month.
The newspaper said the attack appeared to be part of a succession of covert operations that have made U.S. authorities, Ukraine’s main military supplier, unhappy.
The report stated that intercepted Russian and Ukrainian communications informed the U.S. assessment.
The U.S. intercepted Ukrainian discussions in which authorities said they felt their government was responsible for the attack and Russian communications indicating it was not a false-flag operation by Russia.
“We immediately said that the Kyiv regime was behind this,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
It doesn’t matter which Kyiv regime unit did this. We know the Kyiv regime was behind this and will move forward from this.”
The publication reported that U.S. officials doubt Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy approves all covert operations. However, officials said he may be aware of such actions in advance.
Russia said Ukraine attempted to assassinate President Vladimir Putin. Zelenskiy denied involvement.
Washington scoffed at the Kremlin’s claim that the drone assault was American.
