Nearly two-thirds of US Democrats think Biden should let the party choose a new candidate, according to a new poll.
On July 17, 2024, influential Democratic Party member Adam Schiff joined the chorus of requests for the US president to drop out of the 2024 presidential race.
Schiff told US media outlets on Wednesday that he has “serious concerns” about Biden’s ability to defeat his predecessor and Republican presidential contender Donald Trump in November.
“While the choice to withdraw from the campaign is President Biden’s alone, I believe it is time for him to pass the torch,” said Schiff, a US congressman anticipated to win a California Senate seat.
“And in doing so, secure his legacy of leadership by defeating Donald Trump in the upcoming election.”
Schiff is the latest Democratic lawmaker to urge Biden to drop his re-election effort after a terrible debate performance late last month sparked doubts about his age and ability to serve again.
The 81-year-old US president has refused calls to step down in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris or another candidate, saying he has more work to do.
“I’ve got to finish this job because there’s so much at stake,” Biden told reporters last week at a NATO summit in Washington, DC.
