In a blog post on Saturday, Microsoft announced that a CrowdStrike upgrade had created an outage that affected millions of computers and devices worldwide. Passengers were left stranded or faced hours of delays as a consequence of the cancellation of thousands of flights caused by the outage.

According to a blog post by Microsoft on Saturday, a worldwide tech outage affected about 8.5 million Microsoft machines following a software update by cybersecurity company CrowdStrike.

On its blog, it stated that they now believe CrowdStrike’s upgrade only affected 8.5 million devices, or less than one percent of all Windows workstations.

users were left without access to services like healthcare or banking when a software upgrade by CrowdStrike, a major player in the cybersecurity industry, caused system difficulties that grounded flights, took broadcasters off air, and left users without access to the internet.

“The usage of CrowdStrike by enterprises that run many critical services reflects the broad economic and societal impacts,” Microsoft noted in its blog post, despite the small percentage.
