Tesla will consider allowing customers to design car parts

Tesla seeks to improve customer experience

Tesla will not be outsourcing their production or supplying the power of car design to any average Joe on the street, but they may create a new hands-on experience to their factory tours.

Musk announced on Twitter that he will consider adding an option to the tour where factory-goers can assist in the production of certain parts in the manufacturing line. This would only occur for their own car so that other car buyers don’t think some pedestrian built their car, but it could offer some unique insight into what all goes into a Tesla vehicle.

However, the concept does pose some logistical hiccups. For example, tour-goers would need to work on part of the assembly line that does requires no experience. The paint job, for example, could be a part that many people could easily handle. But obviously, only engineers would be able to configure the car’s battery.

Plus, depending on the nature of the manufacturing step, this process could significantly slow down the production line, which has been struggling for over a year. Only recently has Tesla been able to meet 3,500 Model 3’s per week, and they still hope to attain a 5,000 mark by the end of June.

Nonetheless, this unprecedented concept would increase Tesla popularity and maybe even encourage more consumers to buy a Tesla vehicle. Further, Tesla tried to implement a “Tesla Tourism” bill that would allow out-of-state buyers to pay their own state’s sales tax and then pick up the car following a tour of their California facility. This would be more of an experience for Tesla buyers and would also lower the price, considering California’s state tax is so high.

This feature may be far down the line (no pun intended), but the concept is exciting and shows that Tesla cares about the customer experience and not just its profits.
