A 15-year-old girl played dead and survived from a Wednesday, July 9, shooting in the Houston area.
According to New York Daily News, Cassidy Stay, the only survivor in the Spring, Texas, home shooting, appeared in the public Saturday, July 12, the day after she was released from the hospital.
Stay, joined by her grandfather Roger Lyon, was at a ceremony honoring the six victims of her family, including her parents, 39-year-old Stephen Stay and 34-year-old Katie Stay, and four siblings aging 4 to 13.
“’Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light,” the young girl quoted from the book “Harry Potter,” and said she felt much better.
Lyon, who was saved by Stay’s quick and clever response to the shooting, called Stay a hero.
“Without her courage and quick thinking, we might be mourning the deaths of 20, yes, I said 20, people today including myself and nearly all of our children and grandchildren,” Lynon said.
The cruel killer Ronald Haskell, 33, who was once Stay’s uncle by marriage, was charged charged with capital murder in court Friday, July 11.
ABC News reported the incident in detail. Haskell dressed as a FedEx delivery man and kicked in the door. He tied up the children and waited for the other family members to come back. He asked the family where his wife was. The Stay said they did not know, and then Haskell just started shooting everyone in the back of head. Stay, who was wounded, played dead until Haskell left and called the police to warn that the killer was going to shoot her grandparents next. After a three-hour standoff, Haskell got of out his car and surrendered.
Haskell had a protective order put against him by his wife Melanie Kaye Haskell in July 2013 before she filed for divorce on Feb. 14. His mother also filed a domestic violence complaint against him on July 3.
