Target Names New CIO

It wasn’t that long ago since Target experienced one of the largest data breaches in U.S. history. Millions of credit and debit cards were affected. If you visited Target anytime leading up to Christmas there was a good chance you were affected too. With such a large and public screw up it surprising that Target is just now hiring a new CIO (Chief Information Officer).

Beth Jacob, the former CIO, retired in March after the debacle became widely known and is being replaced by Bob DeRodes. A native to Atlanta, DeRodes has held similar positions with Home Depot, Delta Air Lines, and Citibank. He also found DeRodes Enterprises, LLC which consults on information technology and business operations. Expectations are high for the new CIO. In a company statement DeRodes stated “It is clear to me that Target is an organization that is committed to doing whatever it takes to do right by their guests.”

There is little question for DeRodes as the new CIO given all his accomplishments. Target is still hurting from the data breach and are doing everything they can to make it right. They are expecting DeRodes to improve current security measures as well as create an overall game plan for possible future security problems. “Bob’s history of leading transformational change positions him well to lead our continued breach responses and guide our long-term digital strategy,” said Gregg Steinhafel, Target’s CEO.

A few of the things Target has committed to changing or improving include reviewing vendor access, enhancing monitoring and logging, as well as working with Mastercard to implement the chip-and-pin security feature for credit cards. With just over 1,900 store in the U.S. and Canada Target is responsible for personal data across the continent. Hopefully the DeRodes hire will give Target shopper a little more peace of mind.
