Commerce Minister Wang Mei-hua welcomed a big Czech group to Taiwan on Monday, one day after Honduras pledged diplomatic allegiance to China.
With Honduras’ decision on Sunday, just 13 nations have formal diplomatic links with Chinese-claimed Taiwan. Still, U.S. allies like the Czech Republic have been boosting support for the democratic island even if they only recognize Beijing.
The Czech lower house speaker, Marketa Pekarova Adamova, led the 150-person delegation to Taipei on Saturday. China criticized the visit.
Wang told reporters following a Taiwan-Czech business meeting that the Honduran announcement and the Czech delegation’s arrival were separate events.
“Taiwan is in a democratic partnership,” she remarked.
“Diplomatically, we can cooperate with many friendly nations, notably in commerce, economy, culture, and other sectors. We will improve relations with numerous democratic nations.”
Pekarova Adamova, who will visit Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen later on Monday, told the business gathering that Taiwan was a vital investment partner.
Taiwan is a democratic, friendly, and significant economic partner.
After getting a call from Tsai in January, newly elected Czech president Petr Pavel was chastised by China.
Milos Vystrcil’s 2020 Taiwan visit before Pekarova Adamova’s. He brought 90 people and said, “I am Taiwanese,” channeling John F. Kennedy’s 1963 Berlin address against communism.
