It has been reported by CNN that Syrian warplanes have dropped bombs on Iraqi towns lying along the shared border. Syria was recently blamed for the death of an Israeli Arab teenager not even a week ago. Now it seems Syrian bombers have killed at least 57 Iraqi civilians and injured an additional 120 according to local officials.
These border cities have been known as Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, strongholds. The recent bombings are just further proof of the fading border between the two countries.
Sabah Karkhout, head of Iraq’s Anbar provincial council told CNN that the bombings destroyed markets and gas stations in Rutba, al-Walid, and Al-Qaim. He condemned the attacks and blasted the Syrian military for its careless bombing missions.
Karkhout said he saw the planes enter from Syria and then re-enter the country after dropping off their payload. At the moment, both Iraq and Syria both deny Syria’s involvement in the bombings.
Clearly though, someone was responsible for the deaths of those Iraqi civilians. Syria has yet to confirm or deny that they were behind the recent Israeli border shooting. al-Assad’s regime might very well be behind these most recent bombings, but at this point it is just speculation.
Sometimes it just seems like there will never be an end to the violence in the bloodied region.
