Despite facing challenges such as a lack of equipment, the sport of sword fighting, or fencing, is gaining popularity in Kenya, particularly among young people in communities like Huruma.

For many participants, fencing serves as more than just a hobby—it’s a positive force that helps steer them away from negative influences like crime and drugs. Mburu Wanyoike, a former gangster turned fencing coach and senior athlete in Kenya’s national team, credits the sport with transforming his life and providing an escape from a life of delinquency.

Inspired by personal tragedy and driven by a desire for change, Wanyoike founded Tsavora Fencing in 2021. Despite limited resources, the club has achieved remarkable success, with 15 fencers earning spots in the national squad and plans to compete in the African Olympic Qualifiers.

One of the main challenges faced by Tsavora Fencing is the affordability of equipment. However, participants approach the sport with enthusiasm and passion, using whatever resources they have available to them.

Tsavora Fencing Mtaani, an initiative under Tsavora Fencing, provides mentorship and training to youth in impoverished neighborhoods, offering them an alternative to the dangers of their environment. Participants are required to maintain discipline and integrity, and many attest to the positive impact fencing has had on their lives.

Despite fencing not being as popular as other sports like football or athletics in Kenya, Steve Okalo, Secretary General of the Kenya Fencing Federation, remains optimistic about its future. With the determination of its members and support from the community, Tsavora Fencing continues to thrive, showcasing the transformative power of sport even in challenging environments.
