The Sweden Democrats, Sweden’s second-largest party and informal government chairman, said on Tuesday that Sweden should seek more EU exemptions to reset relations with the 27-member union.

Jimmie Akesson agreed with Euroskeptics that “German, Polish or French politicians, in practice decide what car you can buy, how expensive petrol should be and which tree you can cut down on your own property” due to the EU’s rising power.

Akesson, whose anti-immigration party dominates Sweden’s right-of-center government, did not call for “Swexit”—a referendum on whether to leave the EU as British voters did in 2016. Instead, he stated EU was incorrect.

“Today, there are good reasons to re-evaluate our membership in the union seriously,” Akesson wrote in the newspaper Aftonbladet.

Sweden’s general elections will soon be irrelevant. That’s forbidden.”

Akesson said the EU might push Sweden to loosen its refugee rules, which have become more stringent.

Gothenburg University concluded 68% of Swedes support EU membership. Last year, it applied to NATO, which includes most EU members.

In 2018, Sweden Democrats abandoned EU skepticism.

20.5% in last year’s general election. Their support helped the minority Moderate, Christian Democrat, and Liberal alliance triumph.

The Sweden Democrats have influenced policy by campaigning for tougher immigration policies and lower climate change targets.
The Sweden Democrats will overthrow the government if it doesn’t cut gas taxes and oppose EU refugee quotas.
