Sundar Pichai is the CEO of Google, one of the world’s most popular and successful companies. A computer scientist by training, Pichai has been with Google since 2004, where he started as a product manager. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming vice president of product management in 2008 and senior vice president of Chrome and Apps in 2013. In 2014, Pichai was appointed CEO of Google following the company’s restructuring under the holding company Alphabet.

The Early Life of Sundar Pichai

Sundar Pichai was born in Chennai, India, in 1972. His father was an engineer and his mother a teacher. He was one of three children, and he credits his parents with giving him a strong work ethic.

Pichai grew up in a middle-class family, and he graduated high school at the age of 16. After finishing high school, Pichai enrolled at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering in 1993, making him one of the youngest students to graduate from the program.

Soon after graduating college with his engineering degree, Sundar Pichai moved to Stanford University. He received an MS (Master’s) in Materials Science and finished with an MBA (Master’s in Business Administration) in 2002. His thesis was titled “Improving the Performance of Software Agents Through History Sharing and Reuse.” At Stanford, Sundar met his future wife. His wife was also a student at Stanford at the time.

After graduating, he moved to the United States and earned a master’s degree from Stanford University and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.

Pichai began his career at Google in 2004, where he worked on the company’s toolbar product. quickly rose through the ranks to become vice president of product management in 2008. He was also instrumental in the launches of Chrome, Google Drive, and Gmail. In 2013, Pichai became senior vice president of Chrome and Apps.

In January 2014, he was appointed CEO of Google following the company’s restructuring under the holding company Alphabet. Under him, Google has introduced several new products and features, including Android Pay, Allo, and Duo. Sundar Pichai oversaw some major changes at Google since taking on the role as CEO. He has pushed for greater integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning into many of Google’s products, including search Gmail YouTube ​and, more recently, its home speaker system known as Google Home, which competes with Amazon’s Echo.

Controversies faced by Sundar Pichai

Pichai has faced some controversy during his time at Google. In June 2015, he fired engineer James Damore after publishing an anti-diversity memo that went viral within the company. The memo drew both criticism and support from many of his fellow Googlers, but Pichai ultimately decided it violated the company’s code of conduct.

Pichai came under fire in March 2018 for attending a summit with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi without mentioning the fact that certain members of his country would not be allowed to enter America because of President Donald Trump’s new ban on travelers from seven predominantly Muslim countries. He spoke out publicly against Trump’s decision in January 2017 when the order was originally issued, showing his support for immigrants to the United States.

Sundar Pichai is passionate about technology and has said he believes it can be used to improve the lives of everyone. As a result, he has championed much of Google’s efforts in this area, including its work with artificial intelligence.

Google was once known primarily for its search engine (which many people still use when looking for information). However, under Sundar Pichai, it has put a lot of effort into bringing a more diverse range of products and services to market.
