After Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with G7 representatives in London on Wednesday, the U.S. State Department stated the G7 reaffirmed their unity and underscored the necessity for tight coordination in dealing with China.
“The G7 noted the importance of close coordination on the PRC (People’s Republic of China) and reaffirmed that the G7 is more united than ever,” the State Department said.
The State Department said Blinken addressed members from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the U.K., and the E.U. on his recent discussions with Chinese leaders on the margins of a London conference.
Blinken’s G7 summit came a day after U.S. President Joe Biden called Chinese President Xi Jinping a “dictator.” China called Biden’s fundraiser statements stupid and provocative.
Blinken recently visited China to stabilize U.S.-China relations, which Beijing believes are at their lowest since 1979.
On Monday, Blinken and Xi agreed to stabilize U.S.-China relations. While the visit did not yield breakthroughs, both sides agreed to maintain diplomatic contact with future U.S. trips in the coming weeks and months.
According to the State Department, Blinken advocated Ukraine’s support with the G7 during Russia’s incursion. The State Department said he met with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal on Wednesday to address the need for Ukraine to pursue reforms to attract investment.
