Senior Chinese ambassador Qin Gang told his Ukrainian counterpart on Thursday that Beijing is concerned about an escalation of the crisis in Ukraine and hopes Moscow and Kyiv would resume peace negotiations.
China’s 12-point proposal on the “political settlement of the Ukrainian issue” calls for a gradual de-escalation and a ceasefire.
Both parties lukewarmly accepted the plan, calling for civilian protection and respect for sovereignty.
Qin told Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, “Beijing hopes that all sides would stay calm, sensible and controlled, and begin peace discussions as soon as feasible,” according to a Chinese foreign ministry statement.
The ministry said It hopes Ukraine and Russia would not block the door to a political settlement no matter how tough.
Kuleba claimed he and Qin addressed the “importance of territorial integrity” during the call.
“I underlined (Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s) Peace Formula for halting the aggression and restoring just peace in Ukraine,” Kuleba tweeted.
Ukraine demanded that Russian forces left Ukraine’s borders in 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed.
