Sea change for Poland as Donald Tusk is sworn in as PM. On Wednesday, the president of Poland swore in the country’s new government under the leadership of newly elected Prime Minister Donald Tusk. This was the final stage in a transfer of power that signals a significant transformation.

Following years of disagreements between Warsaw and Brussels under the administration of the previous government, which was led by the Law and Justice (PiS) party, the nomination of former European Council President Tusk has renewed optimism over the possibility of improved ties with the other member states of the European Union.

Tusk committed to acquiring billions of euros for Poland in a Tuesday speech he delivered to the Polish parliament. Due to concerns about the rule of law, the European Union has blocked the euro.

On the other hand, President Andrzej Duda’s ability to veto bills and the judges chosen under PiS reforms, which opponents claimed compromised the independence of the courts, may make his mission more challenging.

“You have to be optimistic,” Tusk told reporters as he exited the presidential palace to attend the ceremony where he would be sworn in as president. I hope we are working toward the same objectives despite different experiences. Without a shadow of a doubt, we must provide service to Poland.

According to a decision handed down on Monday by Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal, the judicial reform legislation that Poland needed to approve to gain access to EU money was unconstitutional.

It reached the same conclusion about interim measures—fines—that the European Union’s (EU) highest court imposes before rendering a final decision. In preparation for the European Union meeting that will take place on Thursday and Friday, Tusk is anticipated to fly to Brussels.

Additionally, Tusk will lend his support to Ukraine’s effort to eventually become a member of the bloc, in addition to his efforts to unlock finances for Poland.

Tusk stated on Tuesday that Poland will lobby for continuous support, which comes at a time when Kyiv is becoming increasingly concerned about the commitment of its Western friends to supporting its defense against Russia’s incursion.

The potential exists that Hungary would not provide the go-ahead for Ukraine to begin EU membership discussions at a conference in Brussels. This would be a disappointing development for Ukraine.
