On Wednesday, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he was “hopeful” that Dianne Feinstein, the chamber’s oldest member, may return next week from shingles treatment.
Since mid-February, Feinstein, 89, has not voted, cutting her party’s Senate advantage to 50-49. Her absence has also hindered Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats’ consideration of President Joe Biden’s judicial nominations.
“I talked to Senator Feinstein a few days ago and we’re hopeful that she can come back next week,” Schumer stated during a news conference.
Feinstein, a liberal California senator elected in 1992, will not run again in 2024.
A California hospital treated her for shingles in February. She planned to work from home in San Francisco throughout shingles treatment.
Last month, Feinstein temporarily resigned from the Judiciary Committee after Democratic calls for her resignation. Republicans vetoed Democratic proposals to replace her on the panel temporarily.
