Russia’s Putin talks about wheat, fertilizer, and logistics in Kazakhstan. During a visit to Kazakhstan on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin advocated for the expansion of grain and fertilizer freight transport lines in Asia as Russia looks to establish new export channels owing to Western sanctions.

During a meeting on agricultural cooperation with President Tokayev of Kazakhstan, Putin presided over and said that Russia’s robust wheat crop will yield around 60 million metric tons of wheat for export.

“We are certainly confident that we will retain the No. 1 spot globally in terms of exports of this important commodity, wheat,” Putin stated.

He advocated expanding maritime lanes to reach major Asian markets like China and India.

Although the restrictions do not expressly target grains, the Western sanctions against Russian banks and businesses have made it more difficult for Russian exporters to arrange payments and move grains.

Moscow has reportedly urged exporters to set a minimum price for wheat exports to protect farmers’ income, but it is unclear how the unofficial program operates.

According to authorities, Kazakhstan is attempting to establish itself as a center for logistics for Russian goods traveling to China and Iran. Along the Caspian Sea, the nation maintains a railroad connection with Iran and runs a route between China and Russia.

Putin made his third known foreign trip on Thursday since the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for the Russian president in March on allegations of war crimes, a move the Kremlin vehemently denies.

Kazakhstan is not a party to the International Criminal Court (ICC), and neither are China or Kyrgyzstan, the other two nations Putin has recently visited.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has charged Putin with forcibly removing minors from Ukraine. If Putin enters any of the 123 nations that make up the ICC, they are required to apprehend him and send him to The Hague for judicial proceedings.

Professional diplomat Tokayev of Kazakhstan has been cautiously impartial in the Russia-West standoff and met Putin just one week after entertaining French President Emmanuel Macron. This week, a top State Department official led a group from the United States to Astana.
