Russian soldiers blasted Bakhmut, the months-old focal point of their attempts to seize Donbas, and the chief of Russia’s Wagner mercenary army warned Ukrainian troops were coming in ahead of an “inevitable” counter-offensive.

In a Facebook post, the Ukrainian general staff reported combat in Bakhmut and neighboring regions. Russian soldiers failed to advance on two northwest settlements. Instead, Russia bombarded at least 12 towns.

On Wednesday, Ukrainian eastern group spokesperson Serhiy Cherevatiy told national media that Russian forces had attacked 324 times with artillery and multiple rocket launchers in the preceding 24 hours.

“The Russians are destroying Bakhmut buildings to prevent our soldiers from using them as fortifications,” Cherevatiy claimed.

On Tuesday, Cherevatiy reported many attacks on the front north of Kupiansk, northeastern Ukraine.

The governor of the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv claimed Russian missiles struck an apartment complex and a private residence.

Vitaliy Kim reported one death and 15 injuries on Telegram.

Reuters could not corroborate combat accounts.

Russia still wants Bakhmut. In a 15-month struggle, they seized certain core areas after nine months of trying to enter the most damaged city.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy hinted last month that Ukraine’s troops might withdraw if encircled.

Wagner’s creator, Yevgeny Prigozhin, a Putin friend, stated last month that his soldiers controlled 80% of Bakhmut.

“Today, well-trained enemy units are already being thrown into Bakhmut,” Prigozhin claimed in a Wednesday video. Ukrainians will counterattack.”

Prigozhin, a critic of Sergei Shoigu, stated his forces “will advance at any cost, just to grind down the Ukrainian army and disrupt their offensive.”

Ukraine’s military has not commented on a fresh counter-offensive to build on last year’s gains to recover Russian-occupied northeast and south.

The senior U.S. commander in Europe indicated Ukraine would get its weapons in time in Washington.

General Christopher Cavoli, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, said that Kyiv had received almost 98% of the military vehicles promised.

Military expert Denys Popovych told Ukrainian NV Radio that Bakhmut was unlikely to improve soon.

“If Bakhmut falls, Russia will have resources to send elsewhere,” Popovich warned. “Bakhmut offers an opportunity to destroy Russian troops and prevent them from being engaged elsewhere.”
