When China’s President Xi Jinping departed Moscow, Russia unleashed a swarm of drones into Ukraine, killing at least four near Kyiv.
The military reported shooting down 16 of 21 Iranian-made Shahid suicide drones, blaring sirens over the city and northern Ukraine. The State Emergency Service said on Telegram that two lodging complexes and an educational center in Rzhyshchiv, a riverfront village south of the capital, were largely damaged.
Four died, and others were buried. More than 100 workers and 28 vehicles were searched for survivors.
“Over 20 Iranian murderous drones, plus missiles, numerous shelling incidents, and that’s just in one last night of Russian terror against Ukraine,” President Volodymyr Zelenskiy tweeted.
“Every time someone tries to hear the word ‘peace’ in Moscow, another order is given there for such criminal strikes,” he said, referencing the Chinese leader’s visit.
Since launching the conflict a year ago and becoming a pariah in the West, Putin’s largest diplomatic gesture was hosting Xi this week. Xi and Putin called each other friends, vowed economic cooperation, and said their nations’ ties were the finest ever.
According to a Chinese statement, the two presidents “agreed that this partnership has gone far beyond the bilateral scope and gained crucial importance for the global landscape and the destiny of humanity,” according to a Chinese statement.
Xi told Putin: “Today there are 100-year-old changes. Together, we alter everything.”
Putin agreed, and Xi said, “Take care of yourself dear buddy, please.”
Xi only stated that China was “impartial” in the Ukrainian war.
The White House encouraged China to persuade Russia to leave Ukraine to halt Europe’s largest conflict since World War Two. The trip came days after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin for deporting Ukrainian minors. Moscow claims to have sheltered minors.
