Russia warns again of US-Russia nuclear conflict. On Tuesday, TASS reported that a senior Russian official warned of rising risks of a direct military conflict between Russia and the U.S.
Vladimir Yermakov, the foreign ministry’s nuclear non-proliferation chief, told the Russian state news agency that Washington’s behavior with Moscow raises hazards.
Since it invaded Ukraine 14 months ago, Moscow has often accused the U.S. and “the collective West” of boosting nuclear war risks to discourage Kyiv’s supporters.
“If the United States continues to follow its current course of confrontation with Russia, with the stakes constantly escalating on the verge of sliding into direct armed conflict, then the fate of START (nuclear arms treaty) may be a foregone conclusion,” Yermakov said.
In reaction to Russia’s suspension of the New START deal, the U.S. warned Russia in March that it would stop providing some nuclear force data.
Yermakov did not discuss the claimed U.S. hostile posture in the TASS interview snippets.
“The most acute threat today is associated… with the danger of nuclear escalation as a result of direct military confrontation between nuclear powers,” Yermakov added.
“And these risks, to my deepest regret, are steadily growing.”
Moscow and Beijing will evaluate the West’s prospective role in the worldwide expansion of the U.S. anti-missile system, which “clearly undermines strategic stability,” he said.
