On Friday, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said Russia would surprise test its Pacific naval fleet with missile launches and torpedoes.
US-South Korea air exercises followed North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile launch.
“The main objective of this inspection is to increase the ability of the Armed Forces to repel the aggression of a probable enemy from the direction of ocean and sea,” Shoigu said on state television.
Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov said Russia’s naval soldiers would be on high alert and deployed to combat rehearsal sites.
The maneuvers will simulate an enemy assault on Russia’s Sakhalin Island and the southern Kuril Islands, which Japan claims from World War Two.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the drills’ regional concerns.
“This habit has persisted for years. However, Peskov told a news briefing that this is for military readiness.
Russia’s navy fired supersonic anti-ship missiles at the Sea of Japan simulated target on March 28.
In March, Russia fired two strategic bombers over the Sea of Japan more than seven hours before Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited Ukraine to show support for Kyiv.
