On Friday, Russia claimed significant fighting in southern and eastern Ukraine, while Kyiv remained silent about its long-awaited offensive.

No impartial reporting from the front lines made it impossible to assess Ukraine’s operation or whether it was penetrating Russian defenses to expel occupying forces.
Ukraine’s counter-offensive may entail thousands of Western-trained and equipped troops. Russia, which had months to build its defenses, has survived strikes since the week began. Kyiv has yet to start its primary effort.

On Friday, pro-war Russian bloggers reported violent skirmishes on the Zaporizhzhia front at Orikhiv, near the midpoint of the “land bridge” linking Russia to the Crimea peninsula, one of Ukraine’s key aims.

Ukraine routinely prohibits independent accredited media from reporting on its side of the front lines during offensive operations.

The collapse of the Kakhovka dam on Ukraine’s Dnipro River has overshadowed the counter-offensive’s early days.

Thousands of people have been forced to abandon homes inundated in the battle zone, large nature preserves have been destroyed, and irrigation systems have been crippling agriculture in southern Ukraine for decades.

On Friday, Kyiv said it had intercepted a phone call proving that Russian personnel controlling the dam had blown it up. Moscow claims Ukraine wrecked it. Western countries claim they are still gathering proof. Still, Ukraine would have no reason to inflict such a horrific calamity on itself, especially as its soldiers were shifting onto the assault.
In its latest battlefield report, the Russian army destroyed over 21 armored vehicles in 24 hours. Unsubstantiated allegations.

Ukraine has announced gains in the east around Bakhmut, which Russian forces won last month after nearly a year of the worst ground conflict in Europe since World War Two.

Kyiv has revealed little about the southern front, widely considered its main assault as it pushes toward the coast and cuts Russia’s access to Crimea.

After visiting the flood zone in the south, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy hailed Ukrainian troops and reaffirmed earlier Bakhmut accusations in his nightly video message.

We notice everything. “But not today,” he said.

Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar said Ukrainian troops have mostly repelled Russian attacks in the east.

The southern front saw fighting at Velyka Novosilka and “active defence” at Orikhiv.

Ukraine has been attacking deep in Russian-held territory for weeks in preparation for its invasion. Russian cruise missiles and drones have hit Ukrainian cities.

In its latest air strikes, Ukraine reported shooting down four of six missiles overnight.

The interior ministry reported one death, three injuries, and four structure collapses. On Telegram, it showed firefighters putting out fires in private homes.

On Thursday evening, two cruise missiles hit a civilian object in Cherkasy, central Ukraine, according to the air force. Regional governor Ihor Taburets reported eight wounded.
