WhatsApp received its first Russian penalties for not deleting illegal content on Thursday, 3 million roubles ($37,080).
WhatsApp’s parent company Meta Platforms Inc (META.O), was banned in Russia as an “extremist” organization last year. Still, the popular IM software has never been penalized for failing to remove illegal content.
Twitter, Alphabet’s (GOOGL.O) Google, Facebook, and Instagram, banned in Russia, have been penalized for content.
WhatsApp was penalized for not storing Russian users’ data on Russian servers.
According to RIA, WhatsApp’s failure to remove Lyrica information caused Thursday’s penalties.
Meta did not immediately react to a comment request outside U.S. work hours.
Moscow has always fought Big Tech for content, censorship, data, and local representation, but the conflict worsened after Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.
