On Monday, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that giving Kyiv F-16 fighter fighters with nuclear weapons would intensify the crisis.
“We must keep in mind that one of the modifications of the F-16 can ‘accommodate’ nuclear weapons,” Lavrov said in a speech at a military installation in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, according to a transcript on the ministry’s website.
“If they don’t get this, they’re useless military strategists and planners.”
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has long requested the F-16 fighters, claiming their arrival with Ukrainian pilots would signify the world’s defeat of Russia’s invasion.
Last month, U.S. President Joe Biden told G7 leaders that Washington supported joint partner F-16 training for Ukrainian pilots.
U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Washington had not decided to send planes.
