Russia alleges U.S. intelligence revelations may be fake, part of a hybrid war against it. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov hinted Wednesday that a recent U.S. intelligence dump might be fake.
The documents, which Reuters has not authenticated, appear to be confidential U.S. evaluations of the Ukrainian war, the two sides’ casualties, and other nations’ intelligence.
Ryabkov told Russian media Wednesday that the revelation highlighted several difficulties.
“It’s absolutely exciting for someone to look at these documents, assuming they are documents at all,” Ryabkov added.
“Since the United States is a participant to the (Ukrainian) conflict and is in effect conducting a hybrid war against us, it’s plausible such things are being done to confuse the adversary—that is the Russian Federation,” he said.
The Kremlin said Wednesday it did not know “like everyone else” how legitimate the documents were.
National security specialists and U.S. authorities suspect an American leaker but cannot rule out pro-Russian operatives.
