The Moskvich automobile, which was manufactured during the Soviet period, made its debut on the list of the top 10 best-selling brands in Russia for the first time in November, according to data that was released by the Russian analytical agency Autostat on Tuesday.

Using data from its partner PPK, Autostat reported that the number of new passenger cars sold in Russia during November climbed by 113% compared to the previous year, reaching 109,706 units. The decline in sales brought on by the sanctions and the departure of Western automobile manufacturers in 2022 is beginning to recover.

In November, the Lada, the most popular automobile in Russia, led the pack with 32,651 units sold and a market share of 29.8%. Chinese automobiles have taken up most of the remaining slots on the list, displacing European and Japanese manufacturers that have left the market.

As Russia’s local manufacturing improves after the evacuation of Western manufacturers, the data from Autustat indicates that Chinese automobile sales appear to have reached their highest point, accounting for more than 56 percent of the market.

In Russia, 939,254 new passenger vehicles were sold in the past 11 months, according to Autostat. This represents an increase of about 65% compared to the previous year.

This year, production of the Moskvich was restarted at a factory located in Moscow during the year. The Russian government bought the plant from Renault (RENA.PA) in the previous year for a symbolic sum of one rouble. This occurred after the French automobile manufacturer departed the market following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

According to anonymous sources who spoke with Reuters, the Moskvich 3 model is a JAC Sehol X4 manufactured in Moscow using kits obtained from a Chinese supplier.

At the end of November, the Moskvich ranked ninth on the list of the best-selling automobiles, with 1,910 units sold, representing a 1.7% market share. The information revealed that 10,676 Moskvich automobiles were sold during the eleven months that spanned from January to November.
