On Monday, Tim Scott, the only Black Republican in the U.S. Senate, launched his 2024 presidential campaign, wagering that his positive message will resonate with a party still loyal to former President Donald Trump.
Scott officially launched his campaign on Monday in North Charleston, South Carolina, after filing with the federal election regulator on Friday.
Scott faces an uphill battle to earn the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic President Joe Biden next year. Reuters/Ipsos polling shows 1% support among registered Republicans.
Scott will be the most prominent Republican to challenge Trump, the party’s front-runner.
Scott’s optimism and unity jump out. He uses his humble childhood to prove that America is still a nation of opportunity.
His appeal to Republicans remains to be seen.
Many Republicans want a brutal election confrontation with Democrats. After New York authorities accused Trump in March of allegedly fabricating paperwork to cover up hush money to a porn star, that is especially true. Most Republicans consider those claims partisan.
Since Republicans have typically run for president from the Senate, Scott, 57, is likely to be the only Republican senator to run.
His South Carolina popularity helps him in the Republican campaign. It is the third state to hold a presidential nomination contest.
Reuters/Ipsos research shows 49% of Republicans will support Trump. However, sources say Trump’s closest competitor, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, may enter the race soon.
Donors love him. Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison is a prominent supporter.
