On Wednesday, Republican U.S. Senator Tim Scott formed a presidential exploratory committee to challenge former President Donald Trump for the party’s candidacy in 2024.
Scott, the lone Black Republican in the Senate, has often referenced America’s potential and focused on his capacity “to disrupt the narrative” of race, attacking Democrats and President Joe Biden on crime, inflation, and other topics.
“Personal battle. “This is personal to me,” Scott stated in a video on Twitter, revealing his plans. I will always defend conservative ideas that make America great.”
Scott, 57, will visit Iowa on Wednesday, New Hampshire on Thursday, and South Carolina on Friday.
According to a Reuter’s invitation, he will give funders and influential supporters a “political update” on Saturday.
Scott has led police reform and spoken out on race. He repeatedly criticized Trump for his racially tinged statements and rejected several of his court choices, accusing Democrats of manipulating racial tensions for partisan benefit.
In a 2021 speech, Scott said, “America is not a racist country,” despite being racially profiled.
He would again face Trump, who launched his second re-election campaign in November and was charged by a grand jury last week.
Nikki Haley and activist investor Vivek Ramaswamy have started Republican 2024 campaigns.
Though neither has declared, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former Vice President Mike Pence are anticipated to run.
Trump’s closest competitor is DeSantis. Most surveys have Scott at 2%.
On Monday, Biden told NBC News’ “Today” that he would run again but wasn’t ready to declare it. Biden defeated Trump in 2020.
